The Central Pacific region of Costa Rica offers excellent inshore and offshore fishing throughout the year. The area has warm weather year-round and has two seasons (Dry season is December – April and Green Season is May – November).
Billfish are the favored target of most visiting anglers, and they are seldom disappointed by around December through April.
To catch and release a half-dozen Pacific Sailfish and even a Marlin or two on a fishing day is common but not unusual to release more than a dozen sailfish a day.
There are also Dorado (Mahi Mahi), Yellow Fin Tuna, Wahoo, Cubera Snapper, Roosterfish, a variety of other Snapper species, Grouper, Rainbow Runners, Snook, Jacks, Mackerel and much more.
Costa Rica’s sport fishing records speak for themselves: there were more than 70 current IGFA world record fish from Costa Rica waters including 17 all-tackle records.

Marlin:
Marlin: October is normally the top month for marlin in this area, but action is also good in September and November. Casual blue and black are often likely to be found at any time of the year.
Sailfish:
Sailfish: mid-December to late April is the best season, but the big schools often move in about October and stay longer. A few sails always show among the catch from June to September, mixed with other species found near the coast during these months.
Tuna:
Tuna: Found throughout the year as they are along the Pacific coast, but most abundant from about June to September. Most are eight to 12 pounds, but a dozen or more over 200 kg and may be another twenty in the range of 100 to 200 kg are made each year.
Wahoo:
Wahoo: Quite rare in the area of Quepos, but more abundant in the late summer, to the south, especially near Drake Bay and Canos Island late June to early August
Dorado:
Dorado: Best action begins with the winter rains from late May and debris from the river mouths, creating ribs like garbage lying on dolphin washed.
Roosterfish:
Roosterfish: Fishing this strong coastal species is simply amazing with the best locations off river mouths and rocky slopes. The best fishing during the summer months, from June to early September.
